Monday 24th of May

Today we analysed 1 News at Midday and Te Karere, making comparisons between the two in terms of what stories were told, how they were told, who was represented, and how they were represented. We found that 1 News delivered a lot more negative news, with things like murders and illegal immigrants, while Te Karere focussed on the good stuff happening in New Zealand. 1 News sometimes showed stories in a bit of a biased way, such as when there were two murder stories side by side. The first one (Auckland suburb) was shot at night and showed scenes of police cars with their lights on, police with guns etc. But then there was a murder in Northland in a rural place and all that was shown was shots of the location on a bright and sunny day. The language was also a lot harsher in the first story. This couldn't really be compared with Te Karere as they didn't show any negative stories like this.
